Update on Sophie

It turns out that Sophie needed to get tubes in her ears. She has had only 3 ear infections, but each one grew more aggressive and eventually were unresponsive to antibiotics. This is why it is so important to only use antibiotics when it is necessary. They do not help viruses and are not always needed for ear and sinus infections in older children and adults. Since Jack was a baby the dosage on antibiotics has grown and more and more kids are getting resistant bacteria in their ears that do not respond to pediatric antibiotics. This was the case with Sophie. Her ENT said that she had resistant bacteria in the fluid that had collected in her ear. The antibiotics worked where the blood was (her ear drum) but the fluid was so thick and colored that once she was off the antibiotic, the infection would return. So, a second set of tubes for our family. We are happy that after only 2 hours at Primary Children's she was able to come home and is happy and running around. She seems to feel even better than usual. Our doctor said that her balance and hearing should be improved even on the ride home from the hospital. I hope that the tubes help her to be happy and healthy throughout the next year.
